SANITARY WASTE
There is a legal requirement for any UK company to comply with The 'Duty of Care' Act which says sanitary waste must be managed to the point of disposal. This Waste must be carried by a licensed carrier such as Island Environmental Hygiene and a full audit trail of documentation must be available and kept by the business for a minimum of two years.
The Environmental Protection Act (Duty of Care) Regulations 1990 (Amended 1991) governs the disposal of waste within a business and Section 34(1) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 imposes a duty of care on any person who produces, imports, carries, keeps, treats or disposes of controlled waste in their working environment. Individuals must ensure that the waste they produce is handled and disposed of in a secure and correct manner. This is a legal responsibility and breaching of the duty of care is a criminal offence. This means that all waste produced within a business setting must be stored and disposed of responsibly in line with government legislation. Waste must only be handled by individuals and businesses who are authorised to do so.
To meet the UK legislation, all female washrooms must have a suitable means of sanitary disposal. Island Environmental Hygiene has a range of sanitary disposal units which offer a practical and environmentally friendly option to suit your business’ individual needs.
Sewerage systems are not designed to handle personal products, most of which contain plastic or other insoluble materials. When flushed down the toilet they can create blockages in pipes and it has been estimated that three-quarters of all blockages contain disposable items such as sanitary towels and other feminine hygiene products. These blockages reduce the efficiency of the waste system and in times of flooding can also mean that sanitary related debris reaches our rivers, canals and seas. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you have adequate provision of sanitary disposal units to meet your staff and customer needs.
It is a legal requirement for businesses to keep a record of all their waste, either received or transferred through a system of Waste Transfer Notes. Each of these notes must be kept for a minimum of 2 years. Island Environmental Hygiene are happy to assist our clients with regard to Waste Transfer Notes.
Island Environmental Hygiene provide sanitary bins and sanitary waste disposal solutions across the whole of the Isle of Wight for all types of businesses and organisations. We supply sanitary bins to dispose of used sanitary products and have a reliable liner exchange service, with collection intervals tailored to suit each individual client and location. On each visit the sanitary disposal units are sanitised, the liner removed and replaced then charged with a germicidal chemical that has an antibacterial action killing germs, thus neutralising bad odours at source. By retaining the same sanitary bins any possibility of cross contamination between sites is prevented.
