CLINICAL WASTE

Clinical waste is waste which arises from either healthcare activities or non-healthcare activities of a similar nature, which may have a potential risk to public health and the environment unless it is properly disposed of.

Island Environmental Hygiene run a Clinical Waste Transfer Station and are currently the only private operator registered with the Environment Agency to do so on the Island.

As defined under the Controlled Waste Regulations 2012, clinical waste is waste from any healthcare activity or non-healthcare activity of a similar nature, which contain any; body fluid, biological material either containing or contaminated by a dangerous substance (this includes animal and human), items containing viable micro-organisms or their toxins which are either known to or are believed to cause diseases to humans or other living organisms, vessels containing medicines or items which have been contaminated by biologically active pharmaceutical agents and sharps.

Due to its nature, clinical waste must be rendered safe. This means that all potential risks from it have been removed. Island Environmental Hygiene are fully compliant with all Government and Environment Agency legislation with regards to the disposal of clinical waste, therefore giving you the peace of mind that your waste is being disposed of both safely and securely whilst ensuring you comply with waste disposal legislation for your business.
